Otani said he had first heard Shota mention it about 1 week ago, but apparently Shota had been think about it since the beginning of 2008. Otani said he believes Shota is not taking a step backwards by leaving professional wrestling but is taking a step forward to challenge the world.

Shota gave a brief comment on his decision:
"I've decided that I want a new challenge that is something besides Professional Wrestling, so I chose to retire. Since there are remaining matches before my final, I promise to do my best until the last so I will have no regrets. I want to show the best of KINGS ROAD and ZERO1 in my retirement match."
"After graduating high school, I entered the world of professional wrestling immediately. The best part has been the support from the fans on all sides when they appreciate my work in the ring. These types of experiences are very rare. I will certainly do my best in the next stage of life and try to take advantage of such a unique experience."
